5 Important Vaccines to Consider This Winter

May 11, 2026

Winter brings an increase in respiratory illnesses such as influenza, COVID-19 and RSV. Vaccination remains one of the most effective ways to reduce the risk of severe illness, complications and hospitalisation.

Why winter vaccination is important

Respiratory viruses spread more easily in colder months due to increased indoor contact and lower immunity levels. Vaccination helps protect both individuals and the wider community, especially vulnerable groups.

1. Influenza (Flu) Vaccine

The flu vaccine is updated each year to match circulating strains. It is recommended annually for most people and is strongly encouraged for:

  • Adults aged 65 years and over
  • Pregnant women
  • Children under 5
  • People with chronic medical conditions

2. COVID-19 Booster

COVID-19 continues to circulate in the community. Booster recommendations vary depending on age, medical risk and previous vaccination history.

3. RSV (Respiratory Syncytial Virus) Vaccine

RSV is a common virus that can cause severe respiratory illness in:

  • Older adults
  • Infants and young children

Under the National Immunisation Program, free RSV vaccination is available for eligible groups, including:

  • Adults aged 75 years and over
  • Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people aged 60 years and over

RSV vaccination during pregnancy may also be recommended to help protect newborns in early life.

4. Pneumococcal Vaccine

This vaccine protects against bacterial pneumonia and is recommended for:

  • Older adults
  • People with certain chronic conditions

5. Whooping Cough (Pertussis) Booster

Important for:

  • Pregnant women (recommended during each pregnancy)
  • Adults in close contact with infants
